Macra

The ancient centre of the valley

Macra

In a particularly inaccessible and steep area, Macra was able to become the junction between the lower and upper valley, a place of rest and trade, its commercial heart.

The municipality is located at an altitude of 875 metres and is made up of 17 villages and hamlets. It was created in 1928 from the merger of Alma and Albaretto, created as autonomous municipalities in 1602.

Many Macra inhabitants left as early as the 18th century as anchovy makers or coopers, two of the traditional itinerant trades of the Maira Valley. Today it is a popular tourist destination, especially thanks to the hiking trails, such as the Cyclamen Trail, which allows you to discover ancient and fascinating hamlets in an easy loop. If you are looking for curiosities, this is the only place where the rare Euphorbia valliniana Belli lives. Macra is an ideal starting point for exploring the valley and its trails.
