Acceglio

At the source of the Maira

Acceglio

Following the Maira back to its source, we arrive at Acceglio, a widespread municipality made up of 14 villages and hamlets. It marks the border with France and is crowned by imposing mountains with shapes that leave a lasting impression. There is a dense network of paths, now used by hikers, linking France to the Maira valley, the scene of trade, escapes (such as that of the Ugolotti family in the 16th century) and emigration after the bloody world wars.

The villages tell the history of this area, with well-preserved historic houses, and the mountains preserve the memory of the wars by showing the fortifications still present on their slopes.

Its ruggedly beautiful nature makes it a popular destination for hikers. It offers itineraries for trekking, climbing and mountain biking in summer; ski mountaineering, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

Acceglio is a true paradise for nature and sports lovers, and for those who want to relax off the beaten tourist track.
