On the Pelvo d’Elva
The route starts from the Colle della Bicocca (2285 m), the end of the Strada dei Cannoni, as well as a panoramic spot on the highest peaks of the Maira Valley and the neighbouring Varaita Valley. We set off, leaving Monviso behind us on an easy path. After about twenty minutes, at a fork in the road, keep to the right on a sustained path that runs along the ridge. We soon come to the first rock faces and the path that descends towards the Vallone di Bellino is left behind. The route proceeds up vertical walls with good holds. To tackle this last stretch, it is necessary to wear a helmet and be careful not to move stones to avoid injuring those behind you. The summit can be reached via the ridge with the help of the fixed chains The return journey can be made along the same route as the ascent or, if you wish, you can descend to Lago Camoscere. Just below the lake, leave the branch-off for Bivacco Bonfante and continue left towards Colle Bicocca. This alternative will certainly take longer but is safer (+100m d+, +4.5km).
This climb is not suitable for those suffering from vertigo!
