Rocca la Meja (Alpine and Multipitch Routes)

“Like a scream that overbearingly comes out of a quiet expanse of meadows, the Meja throws its long claws towards the blue sky; with its long and sharp silver mane it makes itself beautiful in the middle of the great landscape, capturing the gaze of those who pass by, amazed by its wild beauty.” – taken from the guidebook Rocca la Meja Alp Climbing.

Rocca la Meja (2831 mt.) is a beautiful mountain that on the south-west side has a series of compact walls of super abrasive limestone-dolomite rock, ideal for climbing. Here the mountaineering history is quite recent (apart from a couple of routes dating back to the first half of the 1900s) and exploration began in the 1980s with the first mountaineering routes that followed the weakest (and broken) sections of the walls. Soon, however, some climbers understood that the compact and super adherent slabs of Rocca la Meja could offer a modern and classy climb. And so with the use of drills and bolts, most of the routes present today were opened. The environment is purely dolomitic and the rock consequently: very compact on the slabs and very broken on the ledges and on the changes in slope.

Recommended period: from June to September/October. The routes are mainly equipped with bolts but there are a series of more alpine routes that must be protected entirely or integrated with quick protection.

Today we find about 65 climbing routes with grades ranging from 5 to 7b.

There are several options for access, from the Maira Valley or from the Grana or Stura Valley, depending on the road closures in the summer and depending on the route chosen. We recommend contacting the relevant offices to find out the road conditions. In any case, it ranges from a minimum of 25 minutes to a maximum of 1.5 hours.
