(11) Pian L’Abà (don Mattio Cross)
Hike on the “Picco”, known as the Pian l’Abà cross (1026 m), a cross 12 meters high.
Together with the Don Mattio Path, this itinerary retraces one of the routes loved by Don Bernardo Mattio, parish priest of Dronero, who used to go on a solitary pilgrimage to the foot of the Cross.
Ring circuit starting from the sanctuary of Santa Maria Delibera. Among chestnut woods you rise on the ridge passing through beautiful, perfectly restored huts, until you reach the Rif. Sellina (private) and the nearby cross of Pian l’Abà, immersed in a beautiful birch forest with curious shapes.
The view over Dronero and its plain is truly satisfying and worth a stop. The route continues downhill on a path and dirt road, and passing through the sanctuary of San Costanzo al Monte, a national monument, it will bring you back to the starting point.
This itinerary is recommended for everyone, it does not present particular difficulties and is relatively short, therefore ideal in half days or in case of uncertain weather. Dogs on a leash are recommended.
