Monte Ciaslaras

MONTE CIASLARAS 3005M
Exploring towards Monte Ciaslaràs, we uncover a hidden gem in the far west of the Maira Valley, journeying past the iconic Castello-Provenzale group to face the majestic Tête de l’Homme.
The trail weaves through the Maurin valley, a historic alpine crossing once frequented by Chiappera’s smugglers for salt transport into Italy and by armies crossing borders during wartime through its eponymous pass.
The Maurin pass, or Col de Mary, is famed for its distinctive mailbox, which Alpine Guide Nino Perino set up. Over the years, his and other locals’ efforts have nurtured the valley’s tourism without exploiting its natural gifts, turning it into an outdoor activity haven.
The summit opens up to an expansive view close to the French border. At an elevation of 3002 meters, it offers a feasible late-season route with a captivating descent through the
Infernetto Valley, immersing us in the upper valley’s wilder side.

Ascent: Starting at Grange Ciarviera, either take the main road or the summer path, passing by Grange Collet at 2000 metres to enter the Maurin Valley heading north. Ascend the right-hand side of the valley to eventually reach the plateau that is home to Lago della Sagna del Colle at 2434 metres.
If snow conditions are favourable, follow the narrow gorge past the lake.
Alternatively, assess the higher slopes on the left, avoiding the west-facing, more avalanche-prone sides, and make your way near Maurin Pass at 2633 metres.
Heading towards the Col de Marinet at 2784 metres northwest, identify the steep channel right of the Ciaslaràs peak. A small detour here can lead to the fascinating Tête du Vallonnet. Now pointing our skis south, we ascend towards the channel, tracing a rocky outcrop at the heart of the depression.
Reaching Ciaslaràs pass at 2973 metres, move onto the western flank to find a saddle on the southern ridge. This leads to the panoramic peak of Monte Ciaslaràs at 3002 metres, with the towering Tête de l’Homme at 3204 metres in view.
Descent: Carefully return to the Ciaslaràs Pass and descend along the well-defined slope into the Infernetto Valley. Progressing over gentle grades, approach a steeper area near the slope/channel leading to Infernetto pass at 2600 metres.
Choosing the best path, follow the main valley to rejoin the road just above Grange Ciarviera eventually.
